How many of you out there know what a Rapid Response Team is and what the Lewis Blackman Act consists of?
Hospitals should display a number in their facility that you can call a RRT, if you feel your loved one is in danger, and you cannot get an adequate response from your hospital personnel.
The Lewis Blackman Act gives you the right to have your attending physician's name and number, to call, if you have concerns that are not being addressed, or you feel you need to contact him.
Hospitals are suppose to make patients aware of these two measures. Please contact SCVPS if you or a family member enters a hospital, and this information is not displayed or given to you. God bless, Jan

Member Posts: 1 | Jan, I just wanted to add that your members should be aware that the right to call the rapid response team or other in-hospital emergency assistance is guaranteed by law under the Lewis Blackman Act. If patients are not given information on how to make these calls, they can file a complaint under the Lewis Blackman Act at http://www.scdhec.net/health/licen/complaint.htm, or call DHEC Health Licensing at 803-545-4370.

Thank you Helen for providing everyone with that much needed information . I would like to encourage everyone to record this info, in case, they should ever need it . For all of you out there, who don't know, Helen is Lewis Blackman's mother. Lewis died from a medical error, and failure to rescue, in 2000, at the young age of 15. Helen has been a wonderful warrior for patient safety. I am so proud of all she has accomplished, in Lewis's memory. Thank you Helen, for all you do to protect patients in SC, and nationally. Lewis and Ann's deaths, have not been in vain. God bless, Jan

How are hospitals supposed to notify patient's of this? Is it in writing upon admission? I could have used this information recently and did not see it posted anywhere and was not informed verbally either. I have never heard of this at all.

Site Owner Posts: 17 | Yes the hospital is suppose to give this info to you in writing upon admission. Most hospitals in SC display the RRT number on the white board. If you do not see it displayed in the hospital, please do not hesitate to ask the nurses. They are required by law to give this to you. Please feel free to contact SCVPS when you are in a hospital who does not meet these requirements. We would be happy to contact the hospital concerning this matter, if you need us to. I am going to post the DHEC guidelines on our "Legal Information" page, as a reference for all. God bless, Jan
